New movement

I am curious about what will be the changes that will lead to the a new design movement. In this paper, I want to understand the new movement of architecture and landscape architecture through a discussion of the past architecture style through the understanding of R&Sie’s practices.

In the current trend of technologies, there is the idea of where “new” will no longer be “new” in a few months. Products are developed very quickly. If we look at the computer market, new products are released almost every month. As similar to the technology paradigm, we identify that designers are lost in today’s society about what new design is. How do we define “new”? What is new? How do we make and what is alternative design? Does it mean creating a new movement of design?

The modernism architecture movement begun in 1927. The movement was defined as new because of the enormous responses to the social context of the time, Industrial Revolution. The modernism architecture employed new materials and construction techniques which were newly discovered during the period. The postmodernism architecture movement caused to change the monotone society which was created by the modernism architecture. The movement brought back the past idea of applying the ornamental as a means to improve the society. The postmodernism went back to its origin and respond to the social context.

R&SIe seems like looking for the new style of architecture. Most of their projects are experimental and response to current social issues. For example, Hybrid Muscle is a pavilion which employed energies only generated by an animal. The project responds to the social issue of global warming and the idea voices a reminiscence of the ancient time of agriculture.

Antonio Gaudi said “Originality consists in returning to the origin”, thus I found from the past design movements and R&Sie’s practices, looking back architectures origins and responding to the current condition are significant for new design.

Key words: Movement, Technology, New
