Within the concept work of West 8's design practice, 2 lineages are evident. The visible links are land art, and physics. By acknowledging these lineages and deconstructing them so that we can understand how they relate to the work of WEST 8 and if they are successful in their representation. A practice as successful as WEST 8 must have a method which they design. it is unpacking, or attempting to unpack this method of designing that we can see what makes them so successful.
The links to land art in the work of WEST 8 are evident in their plans and aerial montages. The work of Robert Smithson in the late 20th century shows large bold organic but unnatural land form on the earth's surface. Spiral jetty, being the work that Smithson was known for has links with many of WEST 8's projects. The use of this method is questionable while many students are taught not to apply a diagram to the landscape. Mabey WEST 8 are able to do this out of experience and does the diagram alter much when applied to the landscape?
There is a strange lineage with the physics of ergonomics. While the person sitting at a desk for hours on end needs the proper seating positon which is a combition of heights, angles, distances and the relationships. So does a landscape need ergonomics, not only how people use it but how parts relate to one other on a cultural level.
